The air in the dormitory suite was thick with the scent of old parchment and the faint, metallic tang of activated enchantments. Rowan, his brow furrowed in concentration, held the Crystal Projection Necklace delicately between his thumb and forefinger. It was a delicate thing, fashioned from a shard of pure, unblemished quartz, etched with spiraling silver runes that pulsed with a faint, internal light. He’d been experimenting with its capabilities in the quiet hours after classes, the hum of the academy a distant lullaby.

Kale watched him from his cot, a nervous energy thrumming beneath his skin. The entity inside him was a restless beast, amplified by the lingering anxieties of the day. Every shadowed corner of their shared space seemed to writhe with unseen things, a constant, gnawing reminder of the Umbrals they’d begun to encounter in the deeper, forgotten corners of the academy grounds. He’d felt their presence, a chilling emptiness that leached warmth and light, and each brush with their void-like nature sent tremors of fear through him, a fear that threatened to crack open the fragile dam holding back his own inner darkness.

“Are you sure about this, Rowan?” Kale asked, his voice a little too loud. He immediately winced, shrinking back into his blankets. “I mean, it’s… late. And the vault… that’s supposed to be the most secure place in the entire academy.”
