The air in the creature biology lecture hall, usually thick with the scent of dried herbs and the faint musk of a thousand different species, had taken on a new, unsettling chill. It wasn’t the kind of cold that seeped from the ancient stone walls, but a prickling, almost electric tension that made the hairs on the back of Kale’s neck stand on end. Professor Eldrin, a woman whose stern gaze could curdle milk at fifty paces, was mid-sentence, her voice a low rumble that usually commanded absolute attention. Today, however, her words seemed to bounce off an invisible barrier, lost in the collective unease that had settled over the students.
“...and it is imperative that you understand the symbiotic relationship between the lesser sprites and the bioluminescent fungi of the Whispering Caves,” Eldrin continued, her brow furrowed as she scanned the room. “Their very existence is a testament to the delicate balance of nature, a balance we are sworn to protect.”
Kale shifted in his seat, his gaze flicking towards Rowan, who sat beside him, his expression unreadable. Rowan’s ‘Split’ nature often made him an enigma, but lately, there was a tightness around his eyes, a subtle tension in his jaw that spoke of internal battles. Across the aisle, Julian, ever the picture of disdain, was meticulously polishing a small, intricate artifact with a silk cloth, his attention clearly elsewhere. Bella, bless her steady heart, offered Kale a reassuring smile from her seat a few rows ahead, but even her usual warmth seemed a little strained.
