Sanctuary of Spells

The air in the Registration Hall hummed with a nervous energy, a symphony of shuffling feet, hushed whispers, and the faint, metallic scent of magic. Kale clutched the worn satchel containing his meager belongings, his knuckles white. He’d been through enough strange things in the last few days to fill a lifetime, and this felt like the apex of the surreal. Rows of gleaming consoles lined the walls, each manned by a stern-faced official overseeing the intake of new students. A soft blue light pulsed from a scanner at the end of the hall, its purpose ominously unclear until a Trapper nudged him forward.

“Next,” the Trapper grunted, his voice devoid of any warmth.

Kale approached the scanner, his heart thudding a frantic rhythm against his ribs. The blue light washed over him, a cool, invasive wave. He felt a prickle of unease, a familiar tremor of anxiety coiling in his gut. Images flickered behind his eyes – the orphanage kitchen engulfed in flames, the terrifying emptiness of the woods after the Chupacabra’s demise, the crushing weight of the iron construct pinning him down. The scanner chirped, and a voice, disembodied and amplified, boomed from hidden speakers.
