The air, moments ago thick with the roar of battle and the crackle of displaced energy, now hung eerily still, a silence so profound it hummed with an unnatural resonance. It was the quiet that followed an explosion, only this explosion hadn't just leveled buildings; it had unraveled the very fabric of existence. Kale, slumped against a wall still warm from the arcane energies that had assaulted it, blinked slowly, his vision swimming with afterimages of shattered time. The golden light of the Time Relic, once a beacon of stability, now flickered like a dying ember, its facets fractured, each shard a tiny, warped reflection of a moment that was and wasn’t. Around him, the Great Hall, the heart of the academy, was a tableau of temporal disarray. Cobwebs, impossibly ancient, draped from chandeliers that had been polished just hours before. Dust motes, dancing in shafts of light that seemed to originate from no discernible source, swirled with the frantic energy of a thousand scattered moments.

A child’s laughter, impossibly high and clear, echoed from a corner where a moment ago there had been only rubble. Kale flinched, his hand instinctively going to the phantom ache where the entity within him pulsed, a dormant beast stirred by the sheer wrongness of it all. He could feel the tendrils of his own fear, sharp and familiar, coiling in his gut, but beneath it, something else was stirring – a profound sense of disorientation, as if his own personal timeline had been stretched and twisted into an unrecognizable shape. He tried to stand, his legs shaky, and caught sight of Rowan a few yards away, his usually bright eyes wide with a dawning horror. Rowan’s small shock-beasts, normally a blur of frantic energy, were frozen in place, their crystalline fur shimmering with an unsettling, static-like luminescence.

“Rowan?” Kale rasped, his voice sounding distant, muffled, as if it were traveling through layers of compressed time.
