Clash of Ages

The cacophony of the siege had crescendoed into a deafening roar. The air itself vibrated with the clash of magic, the guttural snarls of Umbrals, and the desperate cries of defenders. Dust and debris rained down from the shattered arches of the Grand Hall, illuminated by the frantic, flickering light of arcane wards straining against the relentless tide of shadow. Kale, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird, felt the familiar, icy tendrils of his own self-doubt begin to coil. He could feel the entity within him stirring, a dark hunger awakening, but he fought it, channeling his fear into a desperate surge of protective energy that flared around Rowan and Bella.

Rowan, a whirlwind of controlled fury, was a blur of motion. The Foot, now a formidable extension of his will, slammed into Umbral forms, scattering them like brittle obsidian. His shock-beasts, small but potent, darted and weaved, their crackling energy arcs disrupting the shadowy forms. Yet, even his formidable skill was being pushed to its limits. He risked a glance towards the vault, where the heart of the academy, the Time Relic, pulsed with an ethereal glow, now besieged by Novalis’s most formidable shadow lieutenants.

Bella, her usually serene features etched with grim determination, stood her ground near the relic’s chamber. Her protective wards, usually a shimmering shield of warmth and light, were now a desperate, crackling barrier, absorbing blow after blow. Her familiars, a loyal pack of spectral hounds, harried the encroaching shadows, their ethereal jaws tearing at the insubstantial forms. But the sheer numbers, the relentless, unthinking wave of Umbrals, threatened to overwhelm them all.
