The air in the academy’s Grand Hall crackled, not with the usual hum of latent magic or the excited chatter of students, but with a palpable, suffocating dread. Outside, the sky had bled into an unnatural, bruised twilight, even though it was well past midday. A low, guttural roar, a sound that scraped against the very bones, echoed from the direction of the central vault. The Umbrals were not just probing the outer defenses anymore; they were a tidal wave, crashing against the heart of the academy.

Kale’s breath hitched. The familiar prickle of fear and self-doubt, the twin triggers that always threatened to unleash the entity within him, threatened to overwhelm him. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to anchor himself to Rowan’s steady presence beside him, to Bella’s reassuring grip on his arm. But the sheer scale of the assault, the raw, primal terror it evoked, was a relentless tide.

“They’re here,” Rowan stated, his voice tight, his gaze fixed on the now-shimmering entrance to the vault. The usual playful glint in his eyes was replaced by a steely focus, a hunter’s intensity. His shock-beasts, usually a blur of buzzing energy, huddled close, their tiny bodies bristling. The Foot, usually so eager to stomp and crack, pulsed with a dark, determined energy.
