Julian’s fascination with artifacts was less a hobby and more a consuming obsession. It was a trait that, in another person, might have been endearing, a sign of deep interest and dedication. In Julian, however, it manifested as a haughty, possessive pride, as if the very existence of these ancient objects was a personal affront to his own perceived brilliance. He’d spent the better part of the morning in the academy’s sprawling artifact wing, a place Kale had only glimpsed during their initial tour. Rowan had been eager to explore, but Julian had practically dragged them both away, muttering about the “unworthy masses” who frequented the public viewing areas.
Now, under Julian’s ostentatious guidance, they were in a restricted section, a place where the air itself seemed to hum with dormant power. Sunlight, filtered through stained-glass windows depicting forgotten constellations, cast kaleidoscopic patterns across polished obsidian display cases. Each case housed an artifact of immense historical significance, relics that had shaped the very fabric of their world. Julian, with a flourish of his hand, gestured towards a particularly ornate gauntlet resting on a velvet cushion.
“Behold,” he announced, his voice dripping with self-importance, “the Gauntlet of Sundered Oaths. Forged by the first Shadow King, it’s said to absorb the very will of its wearer, turning them into an unfeeling instrument of destruction. Utterly fascinating, in a barbaric sort of way.” He sniffed disdainfully. “Though its craftsmanship is… rudimentary.”
