The air in the academy’s hallowed halls, usually thrumming with the quiet hum of learning and the distant chatter of students, felt heavy, thick with an unspoken tension. For Kale, every moment was a tightrope walk. The fear of his own uncontrolled emotions, the gnawing self-doubt that lurked in the quiet corners of his mind, was a constant threat. He knew, with a chilling certainty, that a single misstep could unleash the darkness coiled within him. It was a malevolent presence, a hungry entity that had saved him, yes, but at a terrible cost. Now, it was a leash, tugging at his sanity, whispering insidious thoughts when his resolve wavered.

Novalis. The name itself was a phantom, a dark echo in the periphery of Kale’s awareness. He didn't know who or what Novalis was, only that the entity within him sometimes responded to the name, a subtle shift in its restless energy, a faint whisper that brushed against his consciousness like dried leaves skittering across stone. It was a puppeteer, he suspected, a puppeteer pulling strings he couldn’t see, guiding him along a path he didn't understand.

He found Rowan in the Infinite Courtyard, the vast expanse of manicured gardens and ancient trees that seemed to stretch into an impossible distance. Rowan was practicing with The Foot, its articulated metal limbs moving with a fluid grace that belied its bulky appearance. Tiny, crackling shock-beasts, no bigger than his fist, darted around Rowan, their miniature arcs of electricity mirroring the focused intensity in his eyes.
