The air hung heavy, thick with the scent of pine and the unspoken dread that had become their constant companion. Sunlight, once a cheerful visitor, now filtered through the dense canopy in hesitant shafts, illuminating dust motes dancing in the oppressive stillness. They had followed the trail of painted stones, each one a small splash of color against the muted greens and browns of the forest floor, a breadcrumb trail left by a child who, they had desperately hoped, was still alive. Akari, her bright energy dimmed to a flicker, had been the one to spot the clearing first. A gasp, choked and ragged, had escaped her lips, drawing the others forward with a sickening lurch of anticipation.

It was a small space, a natural amphitheater carved from the ancient trees, carpeted in a soft layer of moss and fallen leaves. Detective Ishikawa’s hand shot out, a firm but gentle restraint on the grieving father’s arm. “Mr. Sato, please,” Ishikawa’s voice was a low rumble, laced with a weariness that went beyond mere exhaustion. “Let us… let us be sure.”
