Chapter 5
A Reckoning Beneath the Branches
The core of the secret is exposed, revealing a painful truth about the community's history. John, Mercy, and Philp face a moral dilemma: expose the past or protect the present.
The air beneath the ancient oak was thick with a silence that pressed in on them, a heavy blanket woven from unspoken fears and the weight of decades. Sunlight, fractured by the dense canopy, dappled the mossy ground in shifting patterns, as if the tree itself was breathing, exhaling secrets. John, his brow furrowed, traced the intricate carvings on the oak's gnarled bark. Each line, each swirl, felt strangely familiar, like a half-forgotten dream resurfacing. He’d always felt a pull towards this tree, a sense of belonging he couldn't explain, but today, that feeling was tinged with an unsettling urgency.
Mercy stood a few paces back, her arms crossed, her gaze sharp and analytical. She watched John’s almost reverent touch, a flicker of unease crossing her face. The locket beneath her blouse felt unusually warm against her skin, a subtle thrumming that had started as soon as they’d approached the clearing. She’d dismissed it at first, attributing it to her nerves, but now, in the heart of the oak’s shadow, it was impossible to ignore. "John," she began, her voice low, "we need to be careful. Collin's warnings weren't just idle threats."
Philp, usually a whirlwind of nervous energy, was unnervingly still. He kept glancing over his shoulder, his eyes wide as if expecting something to leap from the shadows. The nightmares had been relentless lately, the same suffocating darkness, the same disembodied whispers that always seemed to emanate from the vicinity of the oak. He’d tried to tell John and Mercy about them, but the words had always caught in his throat, tangled with a fear he couldn't articulate. Now, standing at the base of the legendary tree, the suppressed memory of a past event, a fleeting glimpse of something he shouldn’t have seen, gnawed at the edges of his consciousness.
