The air hung thick and still around the ancient oak, a silence that felt less like peace and more like a held breath. John, Mercy, Philp, and Collin stood beneath its sprawling branches, the afternoon sun dappling through the leaves in shifting, uncertain patterns. Collin’s presence had been an unexpected shadow, appearing as if summoned by their very contemplation of the tree. His face, usually etched with a kindly weariness, was uncharacteristically stern, his eyes, dark and deep-set, seemed to hold the weight of ages.

“You tread on dangerous ground,” Collin’s voice was a low rumble, barely disturbing the quiet. It wasn’t a plea, but a pronouncement, heavy with an authority that brooked no argument. He gestured vaguely towards the gnarled trunk, its bark a roadmap of time. “Some truths are best left buried, like the roots of this old sentinel. They hold fast for a reason.”

John, ever the one to push, stepped forward, his gaze unwavering. “And what reason is that, Collin? What are you so afraid we’ll find?” His curiosity, a restless flame, burned brighter with every word the elder uttered. He felt a familiar friction with Mercy, who stood a step behind him, her hand instinctively touching the cool metal of the locket hidden beneath her blouse. She watched Collin with a practiced skepticism, her mind already dissecting his words, searching for the cracks in his pronouncements.
