The Parents' Return
In the midst of the struggle, Victoria and Arthur return home unexpectedly. They walk into the room, witnessing the scene and immediately misinterpreting Ila's distress.
The muffled sounds of the night outside did little to soothe the frantic pounding of Ila’s heart. Her breath hitched, a ragged gasp caught in her throat as Leo’s face loomed too close, his eyes a dark, unsettling swirl that promised something she didn’t want. Her hands, small and trembling, pushed against his chest, a futile effort against his determined weight. The scent of him, a strange mix of cheap cologne and something cloyingly sweet, filled her nostrils, making her stomach churn. She twisted her head away, a desperate plea forming on her lips, but no sound escaped. This was a nightmare, a replay of shadows she’d tried so hard to outrun.
Just as his breath ghosted over her cheek, a sound, sharp and jarring, cut through the charged air. The click of a lock, followed by the murmur of familiar voices. Leo froze, his body stiffening against hers. Ila’s eyes, wide with a mixture of terror and a flicker of desperate hope, darted towards the door.
Victoria’s voice, warm and lilting, drifted in. "I think we can skip dessert, Arthur. I just have a feeling we should check on the children."
