Chapter 7
The Shadow at the Window
While Ila is in her room, Leo appears at her window. The sight of him, unexpected and unnerving, sends a jolt of fear through her. She freezes, unsure of his intentions.
The old house settled around Ila like a familiar blanket, but tonight, it felt more like a shroud. The silence, usually a comforting balm, pressed in on her, amplifying the frantic beat of her own heart. She sat on the edge of her bed, the worn quilt tucked around her legs, her gaze fixed on the window. It was a large, arched pane, framed by heavy velvet curtains that usually kept the world at bay. The dread that had been a low hum beneath her skin now surged, cold and sharp.
Slowly, deliberately, Ila pushed herself up from the bed. Her legs felt heavy, unresponsive, as if they belonged to someone else. She took a step towards the window, then another, her bare feet making no sound on the thick rug. The scratching stopped. A shadow flickered across the glass, too large to be a branch, too deliberate to be the wind. Then, a face appeared, pressed against the pane, framed by the moonlight.
