The silence in the house had become a thick, suffocating blanket, muffling every sound, every emotion, until it felt as though the very air had solidified. Ila moved through the days like a ghost, her footsteps barely disturbing the dust motes dancing in the slivers of sunlight that dared to penetrate her room. The lock on her door, once a symbol of her fear, had become her sanctuary, a small, tangible barrier against the unseen currents that swirled through the house. She ate when she remembered, slept when exhaustion finally claimed her, her world shrunk to the dimensions of her small room and the vast, echoing landscape of her own heart.

Victoria watched her, a knot of unease tightening in her chest with each passing day. She saw the girl’s withdrawal, the way her eyes, once so bright with a nascent hope, now held a perpetual shadow. Arthur, too, noticed the change, the quietude that had settled over their adopted daughter like a shroud. He’d tried to engage her, to draw her out with gentle questions and offerings of shared activities, but Ila remained a closed book, her responses polite but distant, her gaze often fixed on some point beyond him, beyond the room, beyond the house.

Leo, on the other hand, seemed to glide through the house with an almost unnerving ease. He was charming, attentive, always ready with a joke or a helping hand, his outward persona a stark contrast to the palpable tension that Ila’s presence seemed to generate. Victoria, caught between her son’s seemingly innocent affection and Ila’s deepening retreat, found herself increasingly unsettled. There were moments, fleeting and easily dismissed, when Leo’s gaze lingered on Ila a beat too long, or when his words, though seemingly innocuous, carried a subtle undertone that pricked at her maternal instincts. But then Leo would smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners, and the doubt would recede, replaced by the comfortable certainty that her son, her sweet, boisterous Leo, could do no wrong.
