Victoria sat at the kitchen table, the morning sun slanting across the polished wood, illuminating dust motes dancing in the quiet air. Ila’s words from the previous evening echoed in her mind, a persistent hum beneath the surface of her thoughts. *“He tried to kiss me, Mrs. Mouser. He climbed through my window. I didn’t want him to.”* The sincerity in Ila’s voice, the raw vulnerability that had cracked through her usual reserve, had lodged itself deep within Victoria’s maternal heart. It was a feeling she couldn't easily dismiss, a persistent itch beneath the carefully constructed layers of familial peace.

But Ila’s quiet desperation, the way her small hands had twisted in her lap as she spoke, had planted a seed of doubt that refused to wither.

Arthur entered the kitchen, his usual morning greeting softening when he saw Victoria’s pensive expression. He poured himself a coffee, the rich aroma filling the room. “Morning,” he said, his voice a low rumble. He sat opposite her, his gaze steady. “You’re still thinking about last night.”
