Ila approaches Victoria, not with anger, but with a quiet, earnest plea for her to listen and understand. She recounts the events of that night, her voice trembling but firm.

The air in the Mouser household had thickened, a subtle but persistent haze of unspoken things. Ila felt it most acutely when she was near Victoria. It wasn't the warmth Victoria usually exuded, but a sort of guarded stillness, as if the mother were holding her breath, waiting for something to resolve itself. Ila knew that something was her. She had spent days in her room, the lock a small, satisfying click against the anxieties that still clawed at her. But the silence, while it offered a fragile sanctuary, was also a cage. She couldn't keep living in this suspended animation, a ghost in the house. She needed to speak, to break the spell.

She found Victoria in the sunroom, a space usually filled with the cheerful chatter of birds in their ornate cage and the scent of blooming jasmine. Today, the cage was empty, the room hushed, and Victoria sat by the window, a half-finished knitting project resting in her lap. Her gaze was distant, fixed on the garden as if searching for answers among the rose bushes.

Ila’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird desperate for freedom. She smoothed down the skirt of her simple dress, took a deep breath that did little to calm her nerves, and walked towards her.
