Leo, quick to spin the situation, claims Ila initiated the encounter. He paints himself as the victim of her advances, his words carrying a deceptive innocence that fools his parents.

The silence in the hallway was a heavy blanket, muffling the frantic beat of Ila’s heart against her ribs. She stood frozen, her breath caught somewhere between her lungs and her throat, as the bedroom door creaked open. The warm, familiar glow of the bedside lamp spilled into the room, illuminating the scene Leo had so carefully orchestrated. And there they were, her new parents, their faces etched with a mixture of confusion and concern, their eyes falling on her.

Leo, ever the performer, was already on his feet, a picture of injured innocence. He untangled himself from the position he’d been in, a position that Ila’s mind refused to fully process, and stumbled back, his hand flying to his chest as if to ward off an invisible blow. His eyes, wide and glistening with unshed tears, met his mother’s, then his father’s.

“Mom? Dad?” His voice cracked, a perfect imitation of a boy caught in a terrible predicament. “I… I don’t know what to do. She… she just… she came at me.”
