The scent of pine and damp earth clung to Kael’s jacket, a familiar comfort that settled around Maiden like a warm blanket. They sat on the worn porch swing, the rhythmic creak a counterpoint to the frantic thrumming beneath her skin. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the yard, painting the familiar landscape in hues of gold and amber, yet it did little to dispel the chill that had settled deep within her bones.

“I… I don’t know how to say it, Kael,” she began, her voice barely a whisper, the words catching in her throat like burrs. She traced the grain of the weathered wood with a trembling finger, avoiding his steady gaze. He was her anchor, her rational harbor in the storm that had become her life, but even he felt miles away now, separated by the chasm of experiences he couldn’t possibly fathom.

Kael shifted beside her, the swing groaning softly. His hand, warm and solid, gently covered hers. “You don’t have to say it all at once, Maiden. Just… start where you can. I’m here. Whatever it is.”
