The air in Elder Elara’s dwelling was thick with the scent of dried herbs and the quiet hum of a life lived close to the earth. Sunlight, filtered through intricately woven reed mats, cast dappled patterns on the packed-dirt floor. Maiden sat on a low stool, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, the unspoken question a heavy weight in her chest. Elder Elara, her face a roadmap of ancient wisdom, sat opposite, her eyes, the color of polished obsidian, fixed on Maiden. There was a stillness about the elder, a profound peace that Maiden envied, a peace that felt impossibly distant from the turmoil churning within her.

“You carry a storm, child,” Elder Elara’s voice was a soft murmur, like wind rustling through dry leaves. She didn’t ask, she stated, a truth that resonated deep within Maiden’s bones.

Maiden swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. “I… I don’t know what it is, Elder.” The words felt inadequate, a pale shadow of the reality that clawed at her senses. She had come here, to the one person who understood the old ways, the whispers of the unseen, hoping for a map, a compass, anything to guide her through this encroaching darkness.
