Maiden sat across from the elder, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, the rough weave of her skirt a familiar comfort against her skin. Outside, the world continued its ordinary rhythm – the distant calls of children, the rustle of leaves, the low murmur of the wind. But here, within these four walls, time seemed to bend, to stretch, to hold its breath.

“You feel it, child,” Elder Elara said, her voice like the gentle erosion of river stones. Her eyes, ancient and deep, held Maiden’s gaze. There was no judgment in them, only a profound understanding that both soothed and unsettled Maiden. “A presence that is not your own, yet clings to you like the morning mist.”

Maiden swallowed, the dryness in her throat a stark contrast to the overwhelming sensation that had become her constant companion. It was more than a feeling now; it was a physical reality, a phantom touch that ghosted over her skin, a whisper in the very marrow of her bones. “It’s… it’s growing stronger, Elder. I can’t… I can’t dismiss it anymore. It’s not just in my mind. It’s *here*.” She gestured vaguely to her chest, her voice barely a breath.
