The room was a quiet hum of hushed voices, a gentle tide of shared burdens. Arthur sat on the edge of a worn armchair, the fabric soft beneath his tentative touch. He’d been coming here for a few weeks now, to this small, unassuming community hall that smelled faintly of old coffee and disinfectant. Each Tuesday evening, men from all walks of life, carrying their own invisible loads, gathered to unburden themselves. He’d listened, mostly, absorbing the raw honesty that spilled from their lips, a stark contrast to the carefully constructed walls he’d erected around his own heart for so long.

Tonight felt different. A knot had been tightening in his chest all day, a familiar, suffocating pressure that threatened to consume him. Eleanor had looked at him with those worried eyes over breakfast, a question unspoken hanging in the air between them, and Arthur had, for the first time, felt a flicker of something beyond the usual wall of defensiveness. It was a fragile thing, this flicker, easily extinguished, but tonight, it seemed to be gathering strength in the dim light of the hall.
