A knot of anxiety tightened in his chest, each breath feeling shallow and insufficient. He was here, on the precipice of something new, something that felt both terrifying and profoundly necessary. Ben’s parting words, “Just show up, Arthur. You don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to,” echoed in his mind, a fragile lifeline in the sea of his apprehension.
He scanned the faces already gathered. They were ordinary men, etched with the lines of life, their expressions a mixture of weariness and quiet anticipation. There was no grand pronouncement, no dramatic entrance. Just men, sitting. Arthur took a tentative step forward, then another, until he found an empty seat on the periphery, close enough to feel the collective presence, but far enough to maintain a sliver of his protective shell.
