It was the quiet kind of thick, the kind that settled in the spaces between words, in the hushed footsteps down the hallway, in the way Eleanor’s gaze would drift past him, as if searching for something that was no longer there. He felt it most acutely in the evenings, when the day’s relentless demands receded, leaving him adrift in a sea of his own making. Maya, his bright spark of a daughter, was a constant, gentle reminder of the life he was supposed to be nurturing, but even her laughter seemed to carry a faint echo of the unease that permeated their home.
Tonight, the silence stretched, taut and brittle, between Arthur and Eleanor as they sat in the living room. The television droned, a meaningless flicker of light and sound, its presence more a shield than a distraction. Arthur’s fingers traced the worn pattern on the armchair, each thread a tiny testament to the years they had spent together, years that now felt like they were fraying, unraveling strand by strand. He wanted to speak, to shatter the suffocating quiet, but the words, when they surfaced, felt clumsy, inadequate, like trying to capture mist in a sieve.
Eleanor sighed, a soft, weary sound that made Arthur’s stomach clench. She didn’t look at him, her eyes fixed on some distant point beyond the fireplace. “Are you alright, Arthur?” Her voice was soft, tinged with a familiar concern that he had long since learned to deflect.
