The fluorescent light of the doctor’s office hummed, a low, persistent drone that seemed to amplify the thumping of Arthur’s heart against his ribs. He’d chosen a time that he hoped would be quiet, a sliver of afternoon carved out from the relentless demands of work and the even more relentless demands of his own churning thoughts. The receptionist, a woman with kind eyes and a practiced smile, had directed him to a small, sparsely decorated waiting room. He sat on the edge of a stiff, vinyl chair, his hands clasped so tightly his knuckles were white. Each tick of the clock on the wall felt like a hammer blow, driving home the enormity of what he was doing.

He replayed his conversation with Ben a dozen times in his head. Ben, with his easy smile and the quiet strength that seemed to emanate from him, had spoken of his own demons with a disarming frankness. Arthur had nodded, a lump forming in his throat, but the words had felt impossibly distant then, like a foreign language spoken on a far-off shore. Now, sitting in this sterile room, the echo of Ben’s words resonated with a surprising clarity. It wasn’t about weakness, he realized, but about courage. The courage to admit that he didn’t have all the answers, that the weight he carried was too heavy for one man to bear.
