The late afternoon sun, a soft, diffused gold, slanted through the kitchen window, painting stripes across the worn linoleum floor. Arthur watched it, a familiar ache settling in his chest, a phantom limb of a joy he couldn't quite grasp. Maya sat at the small, chipped table, her brow furrowed in concentration as she meticulously colored a drawing. Her tongue poked out from the corner of her mouth, a tiny, tell-tale sign of her intense focus. He’d seen that concentration a thousand times, yet today, it felt different. Today, he saw not just a child lost in her art, but a child who deserved more than the shadows that had crept into their home.

He’d been watching her from the doorway for a few minutes, the familiar guilt a heavy cloak around his shoulders. So much time lost, so many moments he’d been physically present but mentally adrift. Eleanor had mentioned Maya’s quiet disappointment more than once, her voice laced with a weariness that mirrored his own, but he’d been too steeped in his own internal fog to truly hear. Now, with the therapy sessions slowly chipping away at the hardened shell around his heart, and the weekly meetings with the men's group offering glimpses of shared humanity, he was beginning to see the world, and his place in it, with a painful clarity.

He cleared his throat softly, the sound seeming to echo in the sudden stillness. Maya’s head snapped up, her eyes, wide and a little startled, met his. It was a look he’d become accustomed to, a flicker of surprise that he was even there, present. He offered a tentative smile, a gesture that felt rusty, unused.
