The air in the Serpent’s Lair hung thick and heavy, smelling of dust, ancient decay, and something else… something metallic and sharp, like blood long dried. Elara tightened her grip on the rough-hewn stone wall, her knuckles white. Every instinct screamed at her to turn back, to flee this place that felt like the very maw of the earth. Yet, the faint, shimmering inscription on the parchment clutched in her other hand pulsed with a warmth that belied the chill of the cavern. It spoke of a shard, a fragment of the Unfolded Stars, hidden within this very den.
“Are you certain about this, Elara?” Liam’s voice, usually a steady anchor, held a tremor of unease. He stood a step behind her, his shield raised, his eyes scanning the oppressive darkness that stretched before them. His presence was a comfort, a solid bulwark against the fear that threatened to consume her, but even he seemed to sense the profound wrongness of this place.
Elara swallowed, forcing her gaze away from the gaping maw of the cavern entrance, now a sliver of pale moonlight against the encroaching gloom. “The lore is clear, Liam. The artifact we seek, the ‘Tear of Aethel,’ is said to be guarded by the beast that dwells here. It’s rumored to hold a resonance with the celestial energies, a key to understanding the Stars’ true purpose.” Her voice was a little shaky, betraying the bravado she tried to project.
