The air in the small café hung thick with the aroma of roasted beans and the low hum of morning conversations, a comforting veil that Sarah usually found solace in. Today, however, it felt like a shroud, muffling the frantic beat of her own heart. She clutched her phone, its cool surface a stark contrast to the heat prickling her skin. Mark’s words, sharp and final, still echoed in the sterile silence of the apartment she’d been forced to leave. Kicked out. The phrase felt absurd, a relic from a story she’d only ever read, not lived. And now, this. The profound, terrifying aloneness.

She’d rehearsed the words a hundred times in her head, each iteration more desperate than the last. *David, I need you. David, please. David, we need to talk.* But the reality of picking up the phone, of dialing his number, felt like stepping off a cliff. What would he say? What *could* he say? The unspoken agreement that had ended their stolen moments, the carefully constructed wall they’d both erected, now seemed impossibly fragile, yet utterly insurmountable.

Her finger hovered over the call button. Her breath hitched. She imagined his voice, the easy charm that had once disarmed her, the warmth that had drawn her in. Would it be the same? Or would it be laced with the same polite distance that had marked their last, brief exchange? The memory of that last conversation, a mere nod in a crowded grocery aisle, felt like a lifetime ago. They’d acknowledged each other, a fleeting flicker of recognition, and then they’d both turned away, back to the lives they had so carefully pieced back together.
