The silence in the small apartment was a heavy blanket, muffling the already muted sounds of the city outside. Sarah sat by the window, her fingers tracing the condensation patterns on the glass, each swirl a tiny, ephemeral map of her own unraveling. The stark whiteness of the room, so different from the cozy warmth of the home she’d shared with Mark, felt like a physical manifestation of her loneliness. It had been just a few weeks since he’d walked out, his face a mask of wounded disbelief, the words "how could you?" echoing in the cavernous space where their life together used to be. He’d accused her of recklessness, of selfishness, of shattering the comfortable illusion they had both so carefully constructed. And then, he'd left her with nothing but a suitcase and a cold, hard truth: she was alone.

She had imagined, in those fevered, desperate days after Mark’s departure, that David would be a port in this storm. She’d pictured his steady hand reaching out, his voice, usually so warm and understanding, offering solace. She’d clung to the memory of their shared glances, the electric current that had passed between them, the undeniable bond that had pulled them together against all reason. Surely, he would understand. Surely, he would help.

But David had become a phantom, a whisper in the wind. Their brief, clandestine meetings had ceased as abruptly as they had begun. Her calls went unanswered, her texts met with silence. When she’d finally managed to corner him, a chance encounter at a quiet cafe she’d frequented before Mark, his eyes had skittered away from hers, his smile polite but distant, like a stranger offering condolences. He’d spoken of his wife, Emily, of their busy lives, of how complicated things were. He’d offered platitudes, vague promises of staying in touch, but there was no warmth, no recognition of the shared secret that had once bound them so tightly. His words were a carefully constructed wall, designed to keep her at bay, to erase the inconvenient reality of her existence in his carefully curated world.
