The air in the old study was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something Eleanor couldn't quite name – a faint perfume, perhaps, or the ghost of a forgotten tea. She ran her fingers along the wall, her gaze fixed on the brick that had felt so loose beneath her touch. It wasn’t just loose; it was *hollow*. A thrill, sharp and bright, shot through her. This was it. This was where Clara had hidden her secrets.

With a little more wiggling, the brick came free. Eleanor’s heart thumped a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She peered into the dark recess. A small, leather-bound book lay nestled within, its cover worn smooth with age. It felt strangely warm to the touch, as if it held a tiny, captured sun. This had to be Clara’s diary.

Carefully, Eleanor pulled it out. The pages were brittle, yellowed with time, and filled with a delicate, looping script. She settled back on the dusty rug, the locket still warm against her skin, and opened the diary. The first entry was dated almost seventy years ago.
