Eleanor asks her grandmother about 'C.M.' and learns about her great-aunt Clara, who vanished without a trace many years ago. The locket belonged to her.
Eleanor traced the intricate, swirling patterns on the tarnished silver locket. The tiny, almost invisible inscription on the back, ‘C.M.’, had been nagging at her since she’d found it nestled amongst dusty lace and faded photographs in the attic. It felt important, a secret whispered just for her. She clutched it tightly in her hand, the cool metal a stark contrast to the warmth of her palm. The image of the girl with the same curious eyes as her own, flickering in and out of existence within the locket’s depths, was becoming more persistent, more demanding. Who was ‘C.M.’? And why did she feel so connected to this ghost from the past?
She found her grandmother, Nana Rose, humming softly as she watered her prize-winning roses, their velvety petals a riot of crimson and blush. The afternoon sun dappled through the leaves, casting dancing shadows on the flagstone path. Eleanor’s heart gave a nervous flutter. Asking about ‘C.M.’ felt like prying, like disturbing a slumbering secret. But the urge to know, to understand the echoes that seemed to follow her, was too strong to resist.
“Nana?” Eleanor’s voice was a soft inquiry, barely disturbing the gentle buzz of bees.
