The air in the hidden garden hung thick and sweet, a perfume of forgotten roses and damp earth. Eleanor traced the cool, moss-kissed stone with her fingertip, the rough carvings a stark contrast to the smooth, worn metal of the locket nestled in her palm. "C.M." The initials were small, almost shy, etched into the surface of a weathered stepping stone half-hidden beneath a tangle of ivy. They felt important, like a secret whispered just for her.

The girl in the locket, the one who looked so much like her with her bright eyes and mischievous smile, had to have carved this. Eleanor squeezed the locket tighter. Its metal was warm now, as if it too felt the thrill of discovery. She imagined the girl, her great-aunt Clara, kneeling here, her small hands busy with a sharp stone, leaving a mark for someone to find, perhaps for her. But who? She looked around the overgrown expanse. Sunlight dappled through the leaves of ancient trees, painting shifting patterns on the tangled undergrowth.
