The air in the old house seemed to hum with a life of its own, a subtle vibration that Elara had begun to notice not just with her ears, but with her very skin. It was a sensation that settled deep in her bones, a resonance that echoed the fragmented whispers and fleeting images that now danced at the edges of her awareness. She found herself pausing, mid-breath, as a teacup on the mantelpiece, untouched, seemed to shift a fraction of an inch. A trick of the light, she told herself, a settling of the ancient timbers. Yet, the unease persisted, a persistent thrum beneath the surface of her calm.

She’d spent the better part of the morning in the library, the dusty scent of aged paper a comforting balm against the growing disquiet. The journal lay open on the heavy oak table, its brittle pages filled with the elegant, spidery script of her great-great-aunt, Isolde. The entries spoke of a ‘gift,’ a ‘sight’ that allowed one to perceive the unseen currents of the world, to influence the tangible with the intangible. Isolde’s words painted vivid pictures of glowing orbs, of whispers carried on the wind, of objects that moved at the mere suggestion of her will. Elara had initially dismissed it as fanciful prose, the ramblings of a lonely woman. But now, as she reread the passages, a shiver traced its way down her spine.

“ ‘The veil thins,’ ” she murmured, tracing the words with a fingertip. “ ‘And the world beyond bleeds through.’ ” She’d felt it too, hadn’t she? A strange clarity that descended upon her at odd moments, a sudden, sharp understanding of things she had no business knowing. The way the garden seemed to bloom brighter in her mind’s eye, not just the vibrant colours but the very *feeling* of the sun-warmed soil. Or the way she’d known, with absolute certainty, that the old grandfather clock in the hall, silent for decades, had finally succumbed to a broken spring, moments before she heard the faint, metallic groan from upstairs.
