Chloe’s voice was a lifeline, a steady rhythm against the frantic beat of my own heart. She sat across from me at our usual café, the one with the worn velvet chairs and the perpetually steaming espresso machine, her brow furrowed in concern. “Elara, you’ve barely touched your latte,” she said, her gaze sharp and unwavering. “And you’re… different. There’s a light in your eyes, but it’s a wild one. Like you’ve seen something you can’t unsee.”
I traced the rim of my cup, the ceramic cool beneath my fingertips. “It’s just… a lot, Chlo. Silas. The penthouse. Everything.” The words felt inadequate, like trying to describe a supernova with a single spark. How could I explain the intoxicating vertigo of his presence, the way his gaze felt like a physical touch, the sheer, overwhelming scale of his world? And then, the other room. The one that still sent shivers down my spine, a bewildering mix of dread and a strange, burgeoning curiosity.
“I know it’s a lot,” Chloe said softly, reaching across the table to cover my hand with her own. Her touch was grounding, familiar. “But you went from zero to a hundred. One minute you’re stressed about that interview, the next you’re… consumed. I’ve never seen you like this. He’s got a hold on you, Elara, and I’m worried.”
