The oak tree, their ancient sentinel, rustled its leaves in a gentle breeze, as if whispering secrets to the sky. Liam and Chloe sat beneath its familiar shade, their knees touching, the scent of damp earth and sun-warmed bark a comforting balm. The dream jar, a repurposed pickle jar with a cheerful red lid, sat between them, brimming with folded scraps of paper. Each one held a flicker of their shared future: a drawing of a rocket ship blasting off to Mars, a sketch of a house with a sprawling garden, a silly doodle of a dragon wearing a crown.
Chloe carefully unfolded a new piece of paper, its edges softened with time. "This one," she announced, her voice bright, "is for our art studio. The one we'll have, right next door to each other, so we can just pop over whenever we have a new idea." She held it up, a vibrant splash of crayon depicting two easels side-by-side, brushes poised.
Liam traced the outline of his own drawing, a tiny, anxious figure at the helm of a grand sailing ship. "What if… what if we can't?" he asked, the words barely a murmur. The thought of their families moving apart, of their secret spot becoming a distant memory, clung to him like a damp shadow. He’d tried to be brave, to draw the bravest sailor he could imagine, but his hand had trembled a little.
