The Reckoning: Facing the consequences of their choices, both individually and together.
The air in their secret nook, nestled amongst the whispering pines at the edge of town, felt a little heavier than usual. Sunlight, usually so bright and playful filtering through the needles, seemed to cast long, thoughtful shadows. Liam traced the outline of a rocket ship on his drawing pad, its nose pointed towards a sky filled with swirling galaxies. Chloe sat beside him, a half-finished sketch of a magnificent treehouse, complete with a rope ladder and a flag, resting on her lap. They hadn't spoken much since yesterday, since the grown-ups had gathered, their voices a low murmur that had seeped through the thin walls of their homes, carrying words like "opportunity," "new beginnings," and the one word that had sent a shiver down Liam's spine: "moving."
"It's a good rocket," Chloe said finally, her voice a little softer than usual. She nudged his drawing with her elbow. "It'll get to the moon, for sure."
Liam offered a small smile, but it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Maybe it'll get to Mars," he mumbled, adding a few more stars around the distant red planet. He knew Chloe's family had been talking about a job offer for her dad in a town two hours away. And his own parents, well, they’d been mentioning the possibility of a fresh start for his mom, who had been feeling a bit restless lately. Two separate possibilities, two separate directions, both leading away from this familiar patch of earth, away from each other. It felt like a giant, invisible hand was slowly, surely, pulling them apart.
