Beneath the Surface: Unearthing past secrets that threaten to unravel their present.
The afternoon sun, usually a cheerful splash of gold across their secret clearing, felt a little muted today. Liam traced the jagged edge of a cloud with his finger, his brow furrowed in a way Chloe recognized as deep thought, or maybe a little worry. They sat cross-legged on their favorite patch of moss, the scent of pine needles and damp earth a familiar comfort. Around them, the woods hummed with the quiet life of the forest – a rustle of leaves, the distant chatter of a squirrel, the gentle sigh of the wind through the branches.
Chloe, ever the more outwardly buoyant of the two, was meticulously arranging their drawings. There were sketches of soaring spaceships, fantastical castles, and a particularly ambitious drawing of a treehouse that reached all the way to the moon. Each one was a whisper of a shared dream, a promise made in crayon and pencil.
“Remember this one?” Chloe asked, holding up a drawing of two stick figures, one with wild, spiky hair like Liam’s, the other with two bouncy pigtails, holding hands. “This was when we decided we’d build a secret tunnel from your backyard to mine.”
