Shane completes intake at Serenity House, settles into her room, and meets Dr. Reed for her first therapy session. She begins to confront the weight of her addiction and takes the first real step toward healing, ending with a forward hook as Dr. Reed challenges her to face the pain beneath her cravings.
The paperwork took longer than Shane expected. Carol the intake coordinator guided her through each page with patient precision—medical history, insurance forms, consent agreements, a list of rules that seemed to go on forever. Shane signed her name until her hand cramped, the stone in her pocket a constant pressure against her thigh.
When the last form was filed, Carol stood and smiled. "Let me show you to your room."
The hallway was quiet, the floor polished linoleum that reflected the overhead lights. They passed a common room where a few people sat on mismatched couches, some watching a television mounted on the wall, others staring at nothing. One woman looked up and nodded at Shane. Shane nodded back, unsure of the etiquette.
