Chapter 9
The Unraveling Thread
The diary entries and dream visions begin to connect, showing Rebecca a pattern of emotional abuse her mother endured.
The cheap motel room smelled of stale cigarettes and desperation, a scent that clung to me like a second skin. Outside, the neon sign of the ‘Starlight Inn’ flickered, casting garish red and blue shadows across the peeling wallpaper. It was a far cry from the cozy familiarity of my childhood bedroom, the place I’d last seen Mom alive, the place where our final words had hung in the air like poisoned darts. I hadn’t slept properly in weeks, not since the funeral. Every time I closed my eyes, the image of her face, pale and still, flashed behind my eyelids. I’d found it tucked away in the back of her closet, a hidden treasure I’d almost missed. At first, I’d been hesitant to read it, feeling like an intruder. But the gnawing need for answers, for some semblance of understanding, had driven me to it. The entries were fragmented, glimpses into a life I thought I knew, but now, with her gone, the gaps felt vast and ominous.
