Chapter 5
Echoes of a Past Life
A recurring dream reveals fragments of her mother's youth, hinting at past heartbreaks and difficult choices, mirroring Rebecca's own.
The scent of lavender and old paper clung to the air, a familiar phantom in my room. It was the smell of my mother, a scent I’d tried to scrub from my life in the immediate, raw aftermath of her death, only to find myself desperately seeking it now. Sleep, once a refuge, had become my last resort, a fragile bridge to a woman I’d pushed away, a woman I now desperately needed. The argument, a jagged shard of glass lodged in my memory, replayed itself with agonizing clarity: the sharp words, the slammed door, the chilling silence that had fallen between us, a silence that had stretched, unbroken, until the final, irreversible silence of her passing. Guilt was a constant companion, a shadow that deepened the gloom of my days and made the nights a battlefield of regret.
And then there was Mark. His charm, once a dazzling lure, now felt like a polished veneer over something cold and calculating. The way he twisted my words, subtly undermining my confidence, the constant, insidious need for validation that bled into every interaction – it was a dance I’d become too familiar with, a dance that always left me feeling off-balance, smaller. He spoke of love, of commitment, but his actions were a constant, quiet erosion of my self. I saw it now, the pattern, the insidious way he mirrored the very insecurities he helped foster, and a chilling thought began to form: was this my mother’s fate, too? Had she, in her own quiet way, navigated these same treacherous waters?
I closed my eyes, focusing on her face, the gentle curve of her smile, the warmth in her gaze that I’d taken for granted for so long. I pictured her hands, capable and kind, the hands that had soothed my childhood scrapes and later, had pressed the buttons of the washing machine with a practiced efficiency I’d never bothered to learn. I willed myself to dream, to find her in that liminal space where logic surrendered and the subconscious held sway.
