The linen sheets, cool against my fevered skin, were a poor imitation of the peace I craved. Sleep, when it finally came, was not a gentle descent into oblivion but a jarring plunge into a world I didn't recognize, yet felt an unnerving familiarity with. It was a garden, but not one of sun-drenched roses or cheerful daisies. This was a place of shadows and secrets, where the air hung thick with an unspoken tension, like the moment before a storm breaks.
Vines, thicker than my wrist, coiled around gnarled trees, their leaves a deep, bruised purple. Flowers, impossibly vibrant, bloomed in the perpetual twilight – orchids like porcelain masks, lilies with throats the color of dried blood. And everywhere, the subtle shimmer of scales, the silent, sinuous movement of serpents. They weren't overtly menacing, not yet. They simply *were*, an intrinsic part of the landscape, their presence a quiet hum beneath the surface of the dream.
