Chapter 16
Sekhmet's Choice
Witnessing Khepri's wisdom and Isis's inner turmoil, Sekhmet feels her loyalty waver. She begins to question the path of absolute control.
The air thrummed with a strange, silent energy, a feeling Sekhmet knew intimately, like the tremor before a desert storm. She stood a respectful distance from Isis, her leonine form a dark silhouette against the swirling, psychedelic sky that now served as the heavens. The usual vibrant golds and fiery oranges of Ra’s dominion had been replaced by shifting, opalescent hues, beautiful in their own unsettling way. Isis, her robes the color of twilight and stars, surveyed the altered landscape from a throne carved from moonstone. Her gaze, once warm like the embrace of the Nile, now held a sharp, calculating edge.
Khepri, the young scribe, knelt before the goddess. He was small, almost insignificant against the grandeur of the divine presence, yet his voice, when he spoke, carried a quiet conviction that had begun to prickle at Sekhmet’s ancient instincts. He spoke not of power or conquest, but of harmony, of the way the sun and moon danced together, each essential to the other. He spoke of the vibrant pulse of life that pulsed through every grain of sand, every rustling papyrus, every beating heart – a pulse that had been amplified, then distorted, by the sudden shift in divine power.
“My Queen,” Khepri’s voice was soft, yet it resonated in the stillness, “Ra’s silence is not an emptiness. It is a different song. A lullaby that allows the world to dream, to grow in its own quiet ways. To silence that song entirely, even with the most beautiful melody, is to risk a stillness that is not peace, but… absence.”
