Chapter 7
A Path Unseen
Following Elara's clue and Hemlock's cryptic directions, Lily discovers a hidden entrance behind the old mill. It leads to a forgotten, overgrown passage, the air thick with an unsettling stillness.
The old mill stood like a skeletal sentinel against the bruised twilight sky, its broken sails like tattered wings against the encroaching dusk. Lily had circled it a dozen times, her heart a frantic bird trapped in her chest. Elara’s whispered clue, a riddle about “where the water sleeps and the wheels have ceased,” had led her here, to this place of decay and forgotten purpose. Old Man Hemlock’s words, too, echoed in her mind: “Look not for the obvious path, child. The truest ways are often veiled by what we expect.”
She ran her fingers over the rough, moss-eaten stones of the mill’s foundation, searching for anything out of the ordinary. She clutched it now, its coolness a small comfort against the rising tide of unease. She remembered Elara’s laugh, bright and clear as a summer bell, a sound that had been cruelly stolen from Oakhaven. The thought of Elara, her kind eyes and the way she’d always tuck a stray strand of hair behind Lily’s ear, spurred her onward. She wouldn’t rest until she understood.
