Hemlock reveals the full, suppressed legend: a shadowy entity that lures children with false promises. He warns Lily of the danger, but her determination to save Elara remains unwavering.

The air in Old Man Hemlock’s cottage was thick with the scent of dried herbs and the faint, sweet aroma of woodsmoke. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating stacks of peculiar trinkets and carvings that seemed to hold secrets of their own. Lily sat on a worn stool, her small hands clasped tightly in her lap, her gaze fixed on the old man. He’d finally agreed to speak, to share the stories he’d kept locked away for so long, the stories the village elders had deemed too dangerous, too fanciful, to be spoken aloud.

Hemlock’s eyes, the color of a stormy sea, held a depth of ancient knowledge. He ran a gnarled finger over a smooth, dark piece of wood, a figure carved with unsettling grace. It was a silhouette, elongated and indistinct, with arms outstretched as if in welcome, or perhaps, in beckoning. Lily shivered, a familiar chill creeping up her spine. She recognized the shape; it was disturbingly similar to the fleeting impressions she’d caught in her dreams, the shadowy form that danced just beyond the edges of her vision.

“They call it the Whispering Willow,” Hemlock began, his voice a low rumble, like stones shifting deep within the earth. “Not a tree, mind you, but a spirit. A creature born of forgotten joys and unfulfilled wishes. It draws its power from the echoes of laughter, the kind that spills out of children when they are truly, purely happy.”
