The air, thick with the memory of recent rain, clung to Elara like a second skin. It was a familiar dampness, one that mirrored the persistent chill in her own soul. She walked beneath the skeletal fingers of the Whispering Willow, its ancient branches draped in a silver mist that seemed to absorb the faint light of the waning moon. Each rustle of its leaves was a sigh, a whispered secret carried on the breath of the night, and Elara felt a kinship with its silent vigil. The Willow had seen so much, held so many stories within its heartwood, and tonight, it felt as if it understood the weight of hers.
Liam found her there, as he often did, a shadow coalescing from the deeper gloom beneath the trees. He didn’t startle her, his approach as quiet as the falling dew. He simply appeared, a steady presence at the periphery of her solitude. His eyes, the colour of a twilight sea, held no judgment, only a gentle curiosity, a quiet recognition of the unspoken sorrow that seemed to emanate from her like a faint, melancholic perfume.
