The tree had absorbed countless sighs, tears, and whispered confessions over its long life, and Elara felt a kinship with its quiet, enduring nature.

Liam found her there, as he often did these evenings. He didn’t call out, didn’t intrude on her solitude. He simply approached, his footsteps softer than the falling leaves, and settled himself on the moss-covered roots a respectful distance away. He watched her, the curve of her profile against the darkening sky, the way her gaze seemed to bore into distances he couldn’t fathom. There was a quiet understanding in his stillness, a recognition of the unspoken burdens she carried. He had seen that same shadow in his own reflection more times than he cared to count.

“The stars are beginning to prick through,” Liam said, his voice a low murmur, like the gentle sigh of the wind through the willow’s branches.
