Elara found Violeta’s dwelling tucked away in a corner of the city that still remembered the sun. Not the sterile, regulated light that filtered through the dome, but the unfiltered, golden warmth that kissed the leaves of the few defiant trees pushing through the polished chrome. The air here, thick with the scent of damp earth and something vaguely floral, felt like a forgotten whisper against Elara’s skin, so accustomed to the crisp, recycled purity of her usual existence.

Violeta herself was a tapestry of time. Her face was a roadmap of a life lived, etched with fine lines that spoke of laughter and perhaps a few tears. Her eyes, a startlingly clear blue, held a depth that Elara had only glimpsed in the faded photograph of her mother. She moved with a gentle slowness, her hands, gnarled with age, still capable of a surprising delicacy as she stirred a fragrant brew in a ceramic pot.

“Come in, child,” Violeta’s voice was like the rustle of dry leaves, soft and resonant. “I’ve been expecting you.”
