Chapter 12
A Glimpse of the Past
Elara uncovers a forgotten story or artifact within the woods that reveals a hidden truth about her family or herself, explaining some of the underlying reasons for her parents' behavior.
The air in the Whispering Woods always felt different, a soft balm against the sharp edges of Elara’s everyday life. Today, it was even more so, carrying a scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and resonant, like a forgotten melody. She’d wandered deeper than usual, drawn by an insistent pull that hummed beneath her skin, a quiet beckoning that her parents’ pronouncements could never silence. Sunlight dappled through the dense canopy, painting shifting patterns on the moss-covered roots and fallen logs. It was in these hushed, verdant aisles that Elara felt most herself, a quiet observer in a world that seemed to understand her without needing words.

Her heart gave a curious flutter. It felt like a secret waiting to be unveiled, a fragment of a story lost to time.
With gentle hands, Elara carefully cleared away the clinging vines. The wood was smooth beneath her fingertips, worn by countless seasons. There was no lock, only a small, almost invisible seam. She pressed along the edge, and with a soft click, the lid sprang open.
