The hum of the fluorescent lights was a constant, a low thrumming that had become the soundtrack to Anya’s existence. It was a sound that burrowed into her bones, a sterile lullaby for a mind adrift. Today, however, the hum seemed to carry a different resonance, a faint tremor that vibrated just beneath the surface of her awareness. It felt like the prelude to something, a subtle shift in the air before a storm, or perhaps, before a memory.

Nurse Lena entered with her usual quiet grace, a tray of medication balanced in her hands. Her smile, a gentle curve that never quite reached her eyes, was a familiar comfort, a small, warm beacon in the sterile expanse. “Good morning, Anya,” she said, her voice soft as brushed velvet. “Time for your morning dose.”

Anya watched Lena’s movements, the practiced efficiency with which she prepared the small paper cup. There was a certain rhythm to Lena’s care, a predictability that Anya clung to. Yet, today, a flicker of unease traced its way through her. Lena’s gaze lingered a moment too long on Anya’s face, a fleeting expression that Anya couldn’t quite decipher – concern, perhaps, or something akin to pity.
