A Glimpse of the Truth
The morning light, a relentless white wash, seeped through the blinds, painting stark stripes across the sterile floor. Anya blinked, the familiar ache behind her eyes a dull throb. Another day. Another stretch of white, punctuated by the quiet hum of machinery and the soft shuffle of Nurse Lena’s footsteps. Lena, a constant, gentle presence, was already there, her movements practiced and soothing as she adjusted Anya’s pillows. Her smile, though kind, held a flicker of something Anya couldn't quite decipher. Empathy? Or was it pity?
“Good morning, Anya,” Lena’s voice was a soft melody against the silence. “Did you sleep well?”
Anya managed a weak nod, her throat dry. “As well as can be expected, I suppose.” She looked at her hands, pale and almost translucent against the crisp white sheets. They felt like her own, yet strangely disconnected, as if they belonged to someone else who was merely inhabiting her body. The gaps in her memory were like missing pieces in a jigsaw puzzle, leaving vast, confusing expanses of white where vibrant colours should have been.
