The air in Wendy’s small apartment felt thick, suffocating, like the moment before a storm breaks. Kurk watched her, his gut a knot of unease he couldn’t quite place. She was pacing, her movements jerky, her gaze darting around the room as if searching for an escape route. The vibrant glow that usually emanated from her, the one that had drawn him in from the moment he’d seen her, seemed muted, fractured.
“Wendy, what’s wrong?” he asked, his voice softer than he intended. He reached for her, but she flinched, recoiling as if his touch would burn.
Her eyes, those impossibly deep pools that had held his attention for weeks, were now clouded with a tempest of emotions. Guilt. Fear. A raw, desperate longing that twisted his own heart. “It’s… it’s not that simple, Kurk,” she whispered, her voice strained.
